The best wireless home security systems
72A wireless home security system is well within the scope of even the novice diy’er to install and setup themselves. In the past wireless home security systems have been unreliable and temperamental to set up. The new era of wireless burglar alarms are as reliable as the more traditional hard wired alarm systems and are able to be installed with a minimum of fuss. This is reflected in the installation cost if you have a professional fit your alarm.
A burglar alarm in its very essence as its name suggests is to let out an alarm signal when an intruder enters your home or other premises. As more people have had alarms fitted and more alarms go off in error the general public seem to take no notice of an alarm bell ringing. In fact most will just see it as a nuisance and try to block it out; the majority certainly wouldn’t bother to investigate what had triggered the alarm. For this reason, alarms have been split in to two fundamental categories.
- Bell only security alarm
-
Monitored security alarm.
The bell only alarm is what Mr. Joe Public as I mentioned above chooses to ignore, having said that it may well deter or at least unnerve a burglar.
A monitored security alarm will alert a specified person or persons should a break in occur. This type of alarm system can be broken down in to a further two systems; the first is the kind that will alert a nominated person and the second is the sort that will alert the police.
Burglar alarms now though have become much more sophisticates and now carry out all manor of security monitoring tasks.
What is the best wireless home security system?
This is a very difficult question to answer to a point the best wireless home security systems are those which you can expand as you need to. What do I mean by this? This is a very broad overview but most systems are built up as modules. In essence a alarm system is a detector (or a monitor, this constantly checks for intruders) and the receiver which receives any signals from the detector. The receiver is usually part of the main control panel, but individual systems do vary.
However, you do not just get one sort of detector, i.e the sort that is based on movement. There are many sorts of detector and you want to look for a wireless security system for home that has the most different types of detector.
What sort of detectors are there?
Motion Detectors
There is your straight forward Passive Infrared (PIR) detector that will detect movement. When this sort of detector was first introduced they were not really suitable for people that had pets, as you can imagine the pets were constantly triggering the alarm. So this brings us on to the next detector.
Animal Immune Motion Detectors
As the name suggests these will not be triggered by animals, you can indoor and outdoor sensors that will not go off by accident.
Magnetic Detectors
These are the sort of detectors that you would put on door or window frames. They are in two parts; one side fits to the door/window the other fits to the corresponding frame. When the door/window are closed the magnets are together, opening the door or window separates the magnets and the alarm goes off.
Shock and Broken Glass Detectors
These fit to a wall or window frame. The shock detector will basically monitor any unusual activity, for example someone trying to ram down your wall, or if you have a concrete garage or timber outbuilding someone trying to access these through the walls. The broken glass detector monitors certain frequencies i.e. that of broken glass and so it doesn’t need to be fitted to the window or the frames.
So all of these detectors have currently been activated by an intruder, what if you want to activate it the alarm. For example you’re at the front door talking to a stranger who tries to break in? Or your out in your garden and a stranger hops over the fence. There is no way a system can monitor this sort of activity, the alarm will need to be triggered by you. This is where next add-on to a modular wireless home security alarm system comes in.
Panic Buttons
You can have panic buttons that you carry on your self. They come with clips or lanyards so you can wear it around your neck, this way the panic button can be activated from any where within your home. You can always keep it with you or if you choose hang it on the wall next to the door.
Aside from the obvious security issues there are a host of other detectors that you can get for a wireless security system that will warn you of other home emergencies such as fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, gas and flooding.
If you do you homework to begin with, then a wireless security system can cover all manor of tasks that will make you feel more secure in your own home.
